five-dots: Megan Bickel and Cassandra Zetta
Five-Dots is a collaborative effort between two friends: Megan Bickel and Cassandra Zetta. It began in July 2016 with the intent of opening up the lines of conversation between artists, makers, curators, and the public. After noticing two factors: the lack of general awareness on behalf of the public, and the lack of public discussion or critique around the fantastic visual arts community within the region, Five-Dots came to be. Our mission is to maintain a free platform that is engaging, stimulating, and thoughtful without being intimidating. We wanted to challenge, without being confrontational, by tackling the practical and philosophical components of being a creative.
We speak to creatives based out of Cincinnati, Louisville, and Lexington about their work, process, ideas, concerns about their community, and workspace as a means to discuss greater general topics such as the politics of being a creative entrepreneur, the financial and social risks of taking up non-traditional work paths, and how it affects them for the better and worse.
Photographer and Co-Founder of Five-Dots
After being taught how to draw by her grandfather at age eight, Cassandra fell in love with visual arts. Through the years of pouring her heart into her work in and out of school, she chose to pursue a major in graphic design. Though she developed a strong love of design during college, Cassandra knew this wasn't it for her.
Post-graduation, after much soul searching and dabbling in various mediums, Cassandra discovered her love of wedding and portrait photography, and leapt into this new realm of artistic expression. Cassandra is dedicated to creating a safe and sacred space for all couples to share their love openly. In addition, she continues to be inspired by other artists, collaborations, and exploring her interests in arts and crafts.
When not behind the lens, Cassandra enjoys spending time with her beloved husband, four anipals, traveling the states, and reading as many inspirational books as she can.
Artist, Writer, Co-Founder of Five-Dots
Megan is an interdiscplinary artist and writer working primarily in painting, based out of Louisville, Kentucky. Her work opens up discussion regarding different psychosocial ideas such as 'calm' and 'calamity'. The paintings also work to play with dichotomy— sometimes intentional, sometimes not— her subjects often always dealing with paradoxical ideas and sentiments.
She graduated from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in 2012 and has since then been apart of dozens of local, regional, and national exhibitions. In addition to maintaining her studio practice she is also a teacher and artist coordinator.
Megan has an invested interest in spreading awareness and documenting the simultaneously blooming and well established arts community within the region.
